Autumn Joint Pain

Why the cold weather can make your joints ache and how to stay comfortable.

As the temperature drops, it’s not unusual to notice more stiffness, aches and discomfort in your joints. But why does the colder weather have such an effect on our bodies? Here are a few reasons:

1. Reduced Blood Flow
The cold air causes your blood vessels to narrow, reducing circulation - especially to your hands, feet, and other extremities. This decrease in blood flow can make joints feel stiff and sore.

2. Joint Fluid Changes
The synovial fluid that cushions and lubricates your joints can become thicker in colder conditions. This makes movement less smooth and can increase that “creaky” feeling.

3. Barometric Pressure Shifts

Cold fronts often bring lower barometric pressure, which can cause tissues to expand and joints to swell. This is particularly noticeable for people with arthritis or existing joint issues.

4. Less Movement
When it’s cold, we’re more likely to stay indoors and move less. Reduced activity can weaken muscles, limit flexibility, and contribute to joint discomfort.
