Your feet carry you everywhere - with diabetes your feet need extra love and care.

Diabetes can cause nerve damage and poor circulation, reducing your ability to feel pain, heat, or cold in your feet. This is why it is important to follow a daily foot care routine.

Essential Daily Foot Habits

  • Daily Inspection: Check your feet daily for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling or a build up of hard skin. Use a mirror or ask a family member to check the bottoms.
  • Gentle Washing: Wash your feet in warm water  (never hot) and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes. Test water with your elbow first.
  • Moisturize: Keep skin soft by applying lotion.

Footwear & Protection

  • Never Go Barefoot: Always wear shoes and socks (or slippers) even when indoors to prevent accidental injury.
  • Check Shoes: Before putting on shoes, shake them out to check for small rocks or sharp objects.
  • Avoid Blisters and build up of hard skin: Choose comfortable, well-fitting shoes and socks.

What to Avoid

  • No DIY Surgery: Never use sharp blades, corn plasters, or over-the-counter chemicals to remove corns or calluses. This should be done by a professional who specialises in foot health.
  • Watch Heat Sources: Keep feet away from heating pads, radiators, or hot water bottles, as you might not feel if the skin is burning.

Professional Care

  • Annual Exams: If you are able to trim your own nails, we still recommend you get an annual foot screening.
  • Nail Trimming: If you cannot trim your nails safely, we recommend having them trimmed by a practitioner every 4-6 weeks. Regular foot care appointments can help you keep your feet healthy and in good condition.
